A Different Sword Fern For Everyone

The sword fern remains one of the more popular ferns on the plants for home market. And there is good reason for this popularity. These ferns are quite something to look at.

This fern gets its name from the lengthy fronds that resemble miniature swords. And no, they are not sharp so you don’t have to worry about them harming that cat like in the old folklore tales. (Well, okay, in folklore the fern is poisonous, but you get the idea).

There are different types of this fern that are known by several different descriptive names.

The erect version of this fern is primarily most happy in humid environments, even though it is also known as the Boston Fern. Now, Boston can be humid in the summer, but it also gets covered with blizzards every now and then. Go figure. Again, the erect sword fern loves humid weather but it can find a happy home anywhere provided that it is taken care of properly by its “hosts.”

Now, when one hears about a plant loves life in humid environments, one would think that it is primarily indigenous to places like Louisiana or Florida. This is true for this fern, but not for every sword fern.

The Western sword fern, which looks slightly similar to the erect sword fern, can be found growing in the wild of Washington State. In fact, the fern can be found in an about the area of Puget Sound. Of course, a fern found in this particular environment can thrive in more milder climates.

Of course, there are many other of these ferns and they grow all over the USA and the rest of the world as well. Each one is unique in its own way and each has its own unique beauty. There are enough different varieties of them out there to appeal to everyone.
